Make good art

When things get tough, this is what you should do: Make good art. I’m serious. Husband runs off with a politician — make good art. Leg crushed and then eaten by a mutated boa constrictor — make good art. IRS on your trail — make good art. Cat exploded — make good art. Someone on the Internet thinks what you’re doing is stupid or evil or it’s all been done before — make good art. – Neil Gaiman, 2012

Yessir!

PS And here’s Neil’s note of appreciation to friend and sci-fi author Ray Bradbury (August 22, 1920-June 5, 2012).

  1. Striking words. Especially now that I just got out of the hospital and will have to stay at home for two months. I should do something worthwhile, indeed. Like make good art. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Art is appreciated according to the taste of the beholder. But artists know what is good and what is bad. Good art appeals more to the senses. Making a good art takes patience, efforts and dedication to achieve it.

  3. i believe we should put that speech in context. try telling that to an out of school youth from basilan, who needs more than art but security, food and education.

    • Yep, I think it should be taken as a message aimed at, aside from the art graduates, those who pursue art as a craft and career; that whoever chooses it must embrace its all-encompassing power and not be sidetracked by life’s moments, good or bad.

Toss in the tuppence!
